Why I prefer home-based players – Former Falcons coach, Okon

Former Super Falcons coach, Edwin Okon has explained his bias in the invitation of more home-based players during his reign, citing the huge potentials in the Nigeria’s domestic league.

The Rivers Angels handler who in 2014 led the Super Falcons to win the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, AWCON, in Namibia, urged national team selectors to step up their scout of talents in the country.

Okon further tasked the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, and the new board to do more in terms of preparations towards enhancing the country’s chances during international women competitions.

He told Goal, “Yes, I’m excited [seeing better competition among the girls] in the women league.

“Those that are in charge [national team coaches] should stand up to pick those [home-based players] that will represent the country.

“With the new board, I think we can as well get players in this country that could be like [Asisat] Oshoala.

“It all depends on how we put our foot on the ground to look for them. We need to stop all this shabby approach to preparation for women football competitions.

“There are so many players in this country [that could play for the national team].

“We don’t need to think of the foreign-based players. When I was in the national team, people say I hate the foreign-based players. No, I do not!

“So, before you can convince me that you are outside there – then you must be exceptional.”
