Sensational singer, Yemi Alade, who emerged Best Female Artiste at the just concluded 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards, MAMA, has indirectly reacted to the recent comment by President Muhammadu Buhari that his wife belongs in his kitchen which sparked up controversies across the country.
DAILY POST reports that as the ‘Johnny’ crooner was called up to receive her award on Saturday night at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, she gave a terse speech which was purportedly directed at the President’s most publicized comment.
Recall that the President had reacted to an ‘explosive’ interview his wife granted the BBC, where she said she may not back her husband at the next election unless he reshuffles his cabinet.
In his response, the president, who was in Germany on a three-day visit to discuss issues relating to security and economy, laughed and replied, “she belongs to my kitchen and living room.”
As though reacting to the President’s outburst, Alade said, “Give it up to all the African women in the building.
“We’re not meant for the kitchen alone, we are not meant for the living room alone, we are not meant for the other room alone.
“We are hardworking women and we belong to the society too.
“If not, I won’t be here receiving this award,” she quipped.
Meanwhile, it was a big night for Nigerian musicians as Wizkid walked away with three major awards namely: Artist of the Year, Best Male and Best Collaboration, while co-host, Yemi Alade took home Best Female and Tekno was named Best Break-through Act.
